Your GIS tool belt.
Mapbelt brings eight small GIS jobs into one local browser toolkit. This is the pre-launch 1.0 release candidate. There is no account, subscription, telemetry or file-upload service.
Mapbelt.html. For the local server and acceptance tests on Windows, run Start-Mapbelt.cmd and follow the addresses shown. The server needs Node.js; the standalone toolkit does not.Choose a tool
| Tool | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Service inspector | Read WMS/WMTS capabilities, inspect layers, change preview options and download metadata reports. Loading an image is a separate action. |
| GeoTIFF diagnoser | Read local TIFF/BigTIFF metadata and common georeferencing/layout findings. It does not decode pixels or certify COG conformance. |
| Footprint exporter | Create an image-extent polygon from supported EPSG:4326/3857 rasters. Export GeoJSON or KML. The outline is not a valid-data mask. |
| XYZ tile calculator | Convert longitude/latitude and zoom into XYZ/TMS indices and a tile polygon. |
| Bounding box toolkit | Validate geographic bounds and get WKT/GeoJSON. West greater than east crosses the antimeridian. |
| Batch raster audit | Inspect up to 100 files sequentially, review failures, search reports and collect footprints. Cancelled runs retain completed files. |
| Raster export adviser | Generate reviewed GDAL settings and quoted commands for lossless exports or explicitly lossy visual JPEG. Conversion runs in your GDAL environment, not in Mapbelt. |
| Coverage planner | Estimate box area/overlap and count XYZ tiles across zoom levels. It counts a mathematical grid; it does not probe a tile provider. |
Repeat a job
Saved sessions stores selected calculator/export settings in this browser only when you click Save. Portable JSON works across browsers. Service URLs, file paths, pixels and raster reports are excluded. Restoring settings hides old calculated outputs and does not rerun requests.
Use Import saved audit JSON to review an earlier report. Imported results retain an imported-report label and are not verified against source files. The import accepts Mapbelt batch, individual file and raster-diagnoser reports, with bounded structural validation.
Privacy and network use
- TIFFs are read from the selected local file using bounded metadata slices. They are not uploaded.
- There are no external fonts, libraries or analytics. The interactive map loads OpenStreetMap street tiles from tile.openstreetmap.org, or Esri World Imagery satellite tiles from server.arcgisonline.com when you choose Satellite, for the area you are viewing, sending only this page's origin as the referrer. Untick Online basemap, or choose Offline diagram, to make no tile requests; your files and results are never sent. Easy Crop reads the GeoTIFF you choose in blocks on your device and writes the crop locally; nothing is uploaded. Reproject and Raster Compressor work the same way: they read your file on your device, write the result locally and never upload it. Reproject uses a coordinate-system library that ships with Mapbelt, so it works offline; JPEG, WebP and PNG output use your browser's own image encoders. The Satellite Band Motion GIF tool is the exception. By default it talks to Microsoft Planetary Computer directly: the area and dates you enter are sent to Microsoft's public catalogue, image tiles are read from its storage, and no account or credentials are involved. Place search sends the place name you type to OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Optionally you can use a proxy; then the provider client ID/secret and the area are sent to the proxy URL you enter. Mapbelt does not store the credentials unless you tick "Remember the proxy and credentials on this device", which keeps them unencrypted in this browser until you untick it. Use only a proxy you trust.
- Service inspection contacts the endpoint you enter. Image preview contacts the service’s advertised image/tile URL when you choose Load image. Browser credentials are omitted; URL parameters remain part of those requests.
- Browser storage contains explicitly saved settings only. Clearing it or moving a standalone file may remove access to those settings; keep JSON copies when needed.
- Downloaded reports can contain filenames, geographic extents and service metadata. Common secret query parameters are redacted in service snapshots, but arbitrary secrets in other text/path segments may remain. Review reports before sharing.
When something fails
- Module loading: opening the modular
index.htmldirectly may fail. OpenMapbelt.htmlor use the local HTTP server. - Service access: browsers may block CORS, TLS, mixed-content or network requests. A browser error does not prove the service is down. Open the request directly or save/import its XML.
- No preview: metadata can be readable even when the advertised CRS, dimensions, format or tile matrix is unsupported. WMS previews support advertised CRS:84/EPSG:4326. WMTS supports specified geographic/Web Mercator matrices and valid limits.
- Unsupported raster: footprint export accepts identified EPSG:4326/3857 with supported transforms. Other CRSs, contradictory units and unsupported seam-crossing raster geometry need desktop GIS work.
- Storage denied: use session JSON instead. Mapbelt does not depend on storage for its calculations.
- Unexpected app error: reload before continuing. Your saved browser settings remain; nothing was uploaded.
Accuracy and limits
Coverage areas use a sphere and rectangle edges along meridians/parallels. They are not ellipsoidal survey measurements. Tile counts include positive-area intersections, clip polar latitude and deduplicate seam columns. Display grids are not basemaps. Raster corners are transformed without edge densification. See the README for exact supported cases and limits.
Acceptance before final 1.0
Run browser acceptance over the local server and download its JSON evidence. It uses synthetic files and mocked services, isolates session storage and clipboard, and suppresses test downloads. Visual/mobile/keyboard review, live-service trials and representative real imagery checks remain separate.
